Stockton Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-5 Travelers
Time Your Drive Around Rush Hour: The I-5/CA-99 interchange and the stretch through Stockton can get surprisingly congested during weekday rush hours (7-9 AM and 4-6:30 PM). The truck traffic is heavy here since it's a major distribution hub. Early morning or mid-day is smoother.
Watch for Sudden Fog (Fall/Winter): Stockton sits in the Central Valley, which gets dangerous "tule fog" November through February, especially early morning. Visibility can drop to near-zero in seconds. If you hit fog, slow down dramatically, use low beams, and consider pulling off to wait it out.
Skip Downtown Stockton for Gas/Food: Pull off at March Lane (exit 465) or Hammer Lane (exit 461) instead. These exits have plenty of gas stations, fast food, and are much quicker to get in/out than the older downtown exits. The Costco at Hammer Lane has cheap gas if you're a member.
Emergency Bathroom Stop: The rest area at Eight Mile Road (between Stockton and Lodi) is generally clean and well-maintained - better than most fast food options if you need a quick stop.
